Home Learning and Early Language for Babies and Toddlers

Helping your child learn to talk and count through home learning are just two of the things you can do that will help them learn faster and do better at school, as they grow older.

You Can Make a Diffrence

At the age of 2 a child should be able speak two-word sentences.

You can help them by:

  • speaking to them about what you’re doing as you get dressed, use your phone or cook – whatever they can see you do, talk about it
  • speaking whatever language you want – it doesn’t have to be English
  • using different types of words, objects, pictures and body language to help your child understand

There’s lots of other support to help you help your baby start talking.

Local Support

Community Centres and libraries offer a wide variety of programmes and events you can join. Babbling Babes, Let’s Get Moving and Talking Toddlers are just a few of the local baby and toddler groups you can go to with your child.

Please visit our Speech, language and communication support and What’s on at libraries pages on the LBBD website.
