Barking and Dagenham Libraries proudly celebrated a remarkable milestone – 10 years of the Braille Buddies group, a valued community group supporting visually impaired residents through friendship, learning, and connection.

The celebration brought together group members, volunteers, library staff, and supporters for a special event filled with food, conversation, and reflections on the group’s inspiring journey over the past decade.

A highlight of the celebration was a beautifully decorated cake featuring Braille writing, symbolising the inclusive and welcoming spirit at the heart of Braille Buddies.

The success and longevity of the group is thanks to the dedication and commitment of wonderful volunteers and partners, particularly Abiola Olabody, whose passion and support have helped the group flourish over the years, alongside Dean Apps, Visual Impairment Rehab Officer, whose continued guidance and encouragement have made a significant impact for members of the visually impaired community.

Over the last 10 years, Braille Buddies has created a safe and supportive environment where residents can come together to socialise, build confidence, share experiences, and develop new skills. The group has played an important role in reducing isolation while encouraging independence, wellbeing, and inclusion.

The celebration also reflected Barking and Dagenham Libraries’ ongoing commitment to The Vision and Print Impaired People’s Promise (VPIPP) – a national commitment ensuring blind, partially sighted, and print-disabled residents can fully engage with library services. Through this promise, the libraries continue to improve access to reading and information by offering:

  • Audiobooks, large print and braille collections
  • Accessible digital resources and eAudiobooks
  • Inclusive Digital Zones with assistive technology
  • Home Library Services for residents unable to visit libraries
  • Accessible community events and outreach activities
  • Supportive library spaces where everyone feels welcome

Braille Buddies is one of the many ways Barking and Dagenham Libraries helps create inclusive community spaces where residents can connect through reading, learning, and shared experiences.

As part of the celebrations, members enjoyed refreshments, shared memories from past sessions, and looked ahead to the future of Braille Buddies – continuing to support and inspire visually impaired residents for many more years to come.

Congratulations to Braille Buddies on an amazing 10 years!
